
Post-holiday blues is a psychological condition that usually arises after someone returns to their usual routine from vacation. These negative feelings may include loneliness, sadness, disappointment, fatigue, and lack of enthusiasm because they have to return to their original routine
Anyone can be in this condition and it is a common thing that is temporary because it only lasts a few days after the vacation period. Post-holiday blues condition is triggered by activities carried out during the holidays that trigger pleasant feelings, thus stimulating the production of serotonin or dopamine hormones.
People experiencing post-holiday blues may exhibit several symptoms. However, common features may include:
- loss of motivation and difficulty focusing;
- easily feel a bad mood;
- feeling tired;
- feeling stressed and anxious because they have to go back to their routine; and
- irritability and frustration.

It is indeed very difficult to return to the previous routine after the vacation period. However, there are some effective ways to overcome post-holiday blues.
- Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep every day is very important in maintaining mental health. In fact, for adults aged 18 years and above, it is recommended to sleep at least seven hours every night.
- Doing exercise: Exercise can be an effective way to overcome post-holiday blues. Light exercise such as jogging, cycling, or yoga can stimulate the production of endorphins, which are known as happiness hormones in the body. These physical activities not only help reduce stress levels but can also improve overall mood.
- Eat a balanced and nutritious diet: Nutritious food intake will have a positive impact on our body. However, the stress that often arises during the holiday season often leads people to choose fatty and high-sugar foods. Therefore, it is important to get into the habit of eating healthy foods and drinks after the holiday period, so that our health is maintained.
- Interact with loved ones: Interacting with our loved ones can keep us from feeling lonely and alone. Start by sharing your feelings and stories.
- Do me time: Taking time for me time can help relieve post-holiday blues. Simple activities such as reading a book or listening to your favorite music can provide calmness and help your mind to adapt again.
Experiencing post-holiday blues is a normal feeling after facing the holidays, feelings of fatigue, irritability, and loss of motivation after the holidays can appear when returning to the routine. Post-holiday blues can occur because the body and mind are still getting used to the relaxed and fun atmosphere during the holidays.
However, this condition can be overcome with a few simple steps, such as doing light exercise, eating a balanced diet, and giving time for me time can help restore balance to the body and mind. In addition, interacting with loved ones can keep your mood stable.
Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Give yourself time to adapt, and slowly your spirit and productivity will return to normal. So, if the post-holiday blues come your way, don’t worry– enjoy the changes and get back on your feet to face new challenges. (KA/ARL)
